Willet Construction

Vacations are winding down, and kids are starting school. Soon we’ll be talking about football and gleaning the final vegetables from the garden.

As we prepare for fall, it’s a good idea to make sure those gutters are staying clear of debris and checking for any roof damage our recent storms may have caused. August can be a challenging time to keep lawns green, adjust sprinklers and system times as needed to avoid brown spots. Prune any dead branches that haven’t yet fallen to keep your yard tidy and prepare for next year. Look for any cracks or gaps in the driveway and sidewalks, and fix them now before cold weather arrives.

Wasp activity peaks in August; they become more aggressive and likely to sting. Apply wasp treatment where you see activity close to the ground. Repeat every few days until you no longer see activity.

Inside, you can eliminate the evidence of summer foot traffic by deep cleaning carpets and other flooring. Organize the mudroom or entry to prepare for backpacks and coats. If you haven’t ventured to the basement recently, take a peek down there to see if there is any evidence of moisture, including any crawl space.

Leaking pipes or foundations can cause a number of problems, so it’s best to address the source of water sooner rather than later. Finally, take off your shower heads and soak them in vinegar to remove hard water residue or any other gunk.

Now that your chores are done, schedule some ‘do nothing’ time. Give yourself permission to simply relax.
