Two red fireworks exploding at night

Summer celebrations continue this month, and calendars can fill with travel and party commitments. Check your water heater before leaving town to ensure it’s not leaking. It wouldn’t be fun to come home to a flooded basement. Speaking of floods, check out the hoses on your washing machine. If there are any bulges or signs of leaking, get them replaced.

Have you changed your furnace filters lately? If it’s been a while, you might want to have your system checked by a professional to make sure everything is in good working order. The hottest days of the year are upon us, so it’s better to have preventative maintenance done rather than have to sweat out a system failure.

If you need something to do while you’re inside cooling off, clean your baseboards and doorframes. Wiping down light switches is another chore that’s often overlooked. If your dishwasher has sediment accumulating in some areas, put 2 cups of vinegar in the bottom of the machine and run a low wash. Now is also a good time to clean refrigerator coils and dryer vents.

Speaking of celebrations, we want to congratulate our Remodelers Advantage Izar Roundtable partners on a recent achievement. DiFabion Remodeling, Inc., out of North Carolina, has been recognized by the National Association of Remodeling Industry (NARI) with a CotY, or Contractor of the Year Award, for a Residential Addition Under $250,000. What a great achievement for a great group. This image is from the May edition of Qualified Remodeler magazine.

Design Corner

A modern bathroom, featuring Western Gothic design elements.

This month’s design style began in the 1940s with fashion, including a mix of Victorian mourning attire and Western wear. It has evolved into interior design’s Western Gothic style, combining dark or rustic wood, black Victorian elements, and hints of the Wild West.

Fun Fact

Graphic of the world map with longitude lines. Each country is shaded in a different color.

This month’s fact was learned listening to my favorite morning DJs — Scott & Joe from 92.9 the Eagle. They have a listener in India, which they found is 10.5 hours ahead of us, rather than an even 10 or 11 hours.

So, I did some research and found that some other places around the globe don’t have an even time difference from Meridian time. For instance, Australia has three time zones, which are 8, 9.5, and 10 hours ahead of Meridian time. And Prince Edward Island in Canada is 3.5 hours behind. Does anyone really know what time it is?
