A large flock of geese flying over a field

We’re entering the busy(er) time of the year when fall games are being played, fall trips are planned, and we gear up for the holiday season and the upcoming new year. Don’t forget to take a little time now and again to just breathe and relax. This is also a good time to reflect on what’s good and positive in your life, which will help keep stress down a little.

As we here at Willet Construction reflect on our year and the upcoming one, we couldn’t be more thankful for our customers who trust us with their homes. We do our best to earn and maintain that trust and genuinely want each customer to have the best experience possible.

If you need something to keep you busy around your home this month, here are a few chores you can do around the house and yard:

  • If you haven’t had your HVAC system checked in a while, do so now. It will give you peace of mind knowing you’re good to go through the winter months.
  • Rake the dead leaves off the lawn. If left, they can harm the lawn. They can make a good cover for gardens and flower beds, though.
  • Check your fire alarm batteries. This is another peace-of-mind thing.
  • Make sure your home isn’t leaking around doors and windows. If the flame from a candle or smoke from a stick of incense waivers near the frame, you’ve got a leak. Leaks can be fixed with some caulk or weather stripping. Or you can ask Santa for new doors or windows for Christmas!
  • Seal any holes around plumbing pipes and cables that enter your house to keep pests out this winter. Mice and snakes can get through pretty small holes. Make sure roof tiles and attic vents are intact.
  • Check the caulking around the tub. If it’s worn, cracked, or falling off, it’s time to replace it. You don’t want water to get into your wall, which can lead to wood rot or mold growth.
  • If your washer seems to be taking longer than normal to fill, your water line may need cleaning. Washing machines have filters where the water lines connect to keep debris from getting into the machine. You’ll have to move it out to get to the inlet, but it won’t take much to clean once you’re there.

As we move into November, the earth is moving for Willet Construction — literally. This project has been in the works for some time, but we finally get to see concrete evidence of progress. When it’s done, we’ll finally have our offices and design center under one roof. Stay tuned and watch this project develop along with us.

In October, the Home Builders Association of Lincoln (HBAL) treated members and their families to a night at Roca Berry Farm. Lots of fun was had by all.

The fall Roundtable meeting was held last month in Chicago for Jason’s Remodelers Advantage group. This was Jason’s first meeting with the Jupiter group, and he’s excited to implement some new ideas.

Design Corner

A rustic/country bathroom design

The design featured this month is Rustic/Country. This style is more traditional and classic than a modern farmhouse. It can include simple materials, from rustic wood to plaid, gingham, and stripes to spindle-back furniture. Elements like vintage signage, barn lighting, doors, or reclaimed wood might also be featured.

Fun Fact

An apple pie

Apple pie isn’t actually American. Apples originally came from Asia. The first pies were baked in Medieval Europe, and a recipe was traced back to England in 1381. However, the phrase “as American as apple pie ” was coined in 1924 and became a common saying during the Second World War.
