Kahoa Kitchen & Dining
Back to all projects
This project started with a wish to change the closed-in feel of the kitchen, update the built-ins by the fireplace, as well as the stair railing.
One major change was eliminating the soffits above the cabinets. Rather than devote so much square footage for utilities, they were neatly tucked up near the ceiling and enclosed out of sight. The uppers above the peninsula were also removed. This created much more storage space for the homeowners, as well as a sleeker look in the kitchen and improved sight lines from the den.
The seldom-used desk area was also removed. The desk cabinet was replaced with drawers and a new cabinet above. To accommodate the need for mail organization, custom cubbies were created in the upper cabinet. Even though the dog has had to utilize another sleeping spot, this area of the kitchen functions much better while keeping essential items out of view.
In the family room the TV was moved to the wall and the existing shelving units removed. New cabinets were created and painted to match the kitchen cabinetry. The new paint gives the existing brick new life.
The third wish was to update the stair railing and refinish the floors. The dated golden oak banister was removed and updated with wood and metal. The floors refinished without golden oak tones.
