FEATURED PROJECT:Cabin Re-Build
When we began this project, the dwelling was a weekend getaway cabin built by the owner’s father. Transforming it into a full-time residence had a few hurdles, but the result is an improved, energy-efficient home with a lodge feel.
First came the structural fixes; footings had to be placed under the building, rotted areas repaired, walls brought to plumb, and the garage door was removed, and a covered entry door took its place. New exterior doors and windows were installed, including a new bay window and a 16′ double-slider patio door. New insulation and James Hardie siding covered the exterior of the home. And a new stamped and stained concrete patio was added.
New walls were built where the garage space once was, adding a foyer with closet, living room, a second bathroom, and a guest bedroom/office area.
A new closet was also framed in for the master bedroom. New plumbing, electrical, and HVAC were installed. A soffit was built along the kitchen wall to run utilities to the new rooms. Then the finishes started happening. The layout for the new cabinetry was outlined, and the island was built.
New carsiding paneling was installed in new areas on ceilings and walls to match what had been in the existing building, and then stained to match the original, along with the new doors and trim. The electrical panel is camouflaged with the same paneling near the front door. Then the flooring, light fixtures, and paint were applied.
Kitchen cabinets were done in two finishes, distressed rustic alder went around the perimeter, and the island is in quarter-sawn oak with a black glaze and a curved back. The perimeter base cabinets were topped with Midnight Majesty quartz countertops while the island received Titanium granite with a leathered texture. The backsplash was taken to the ceiling, tile wrapping the soffit helped make it disappear.
A grand light fixture was chosen for the vaulted skylight. While most of the home received luxury vinyl plank flooring, the bathrooms received a slate-look ceramic tile floor to match the slate backsplash in the kitchen.
The master bath cabinetry was also done in the rustic alder without the distressing. It was topped with the same granite as the kitchen island. The new office/guest room looks out to the new family room.
There is a new entryway and closet, as well.
During the design process, Jenny spent time with the owners on furniture placement, planning and picking all the materials and finishes to make sure all would fit together. Now the owners have a cozy, comfortable home that is now structurally sound as well as beautiful!
TAKE IT FROM THE PROS…
This is our new feature area where we offer pro tips from the industry to make your life easier.
The days are getting shorter, so the weather should be getting cooler. After a long, hot summer, your siding might require some cleaning as these conditions are right for mildew and grime. Now is a good time to pressure wash your siding, being careful not to shoot water up under your siding. Pay close attention to signs of cracking, rot, and warped areas so these can be repaired before it’s cold. Now is also a good time to check for leaky faucets to be repaired before cold weather hits. And before the first frost, call a chimney sweep so you can be confident your first fall fire is safe. Don’t forget to change your air filters on your HVAC system, and consider having it serviced as we close in on changing from AC to Heat.
Buy a roof rake! We don’t get huge amounts of snow very often, but when we do, it pays to rake the snow off your roof to prevent water from getting in the home when it starts to melt.
Aging-in-place design is growing more and more popular. This might include something as easy as adding grab bars in the bathroom, widening doorways for a wheelchair, or even remodeling your shower to a zero-entry design. Other changes you can make are the handles on your doors and faucets.
When making any changes to your home, the result should give you an overall positive vibe when you enter. Natural light can have a big impact on the mood of a room. Making opening curtains or blinds easy will help achieve that. Plants are a great way to bring life into a space and give good vibes to a room. Greenery relaxes the mind and helps relieve stress. They also boost oxygen in the air!
Don’t forget color and texture in the space. If you want to add energy to a space, use yellow. If you want to make it relaxing, use blues. Patterned tile or wallpaper can add interest and texture to any room. You don’t have to overwhelm the space; pops of color here and there will go a long way. Putting plants in bright pots, for instance, or adding throw pillows can put a smile on your face.
WHAT WOULD JENNY DO?
Q: I want to change my kitchen layout just a little, but don’t want to get new cabinets, what do I do?
A: “We have cabinetry resources that can re-create your cabinet style, so we can add a few to match your existing and no one will know they haven’t been there the entire time!”
Cheese is the most stolen food in the world. In fact, it’s stolen so much it has its own percentage! About 4% of all cheese made around the globe ends up stolen. There’s even a black market for cheese!
